Obama's Foreign Policy Blunders

WANTED: A Grand Strategy for America
The wave Obama just missed—again—is the revolutionary wave of Middle Eastern democracy. It has surged through the region twice since he was elected: once in Iran in the summer of 2009, the second time right across North Africa, from Tunisia all the way down the Red Sea toYemen. But the swell has been biggest in Egypt, the Middle East’s most populous country.
In each case, the president faced stark alternatives. He could try to catch the wave, Bismarck style, by lending his support to the youthful revolutionaries and trying to ride it in a direction advantageous to American interests. Or he could do nothing and let the forces of reaction prevail. In the case of Iran, he did nothing, and the thugs of the Islamic Republic ruthlessly crushed the demonstrations. This time around, in Egypt, it was worse. He did both—some days exhorting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to leave, other days drawing back and recommending an “orderly transition.”
The result has been a foreign-policy debacle. The president has alienated everybody: not only Mubarak’s cronies in the military, but also the youthful crowds in the streets of Cairo. Whoever ultimately wins, Obama loses. And the alienation doesn’t end there. America’s two closest friends in the region—Israel and Saudi Arabia—are both disgusted. The Saudis, who dread all manifestations of revolution, are appalled at Washington’s failure to resolutely prop up Mubarak. The Israelis, meanwhile, are dismayed by the administration’s apparent cluelessness.

Obama's Lack of Leadership is Stunning

The Wall Street Journal
FEBRUARY 26, 2011
Outflanked by France

On Libya, Obama is missing in action..

The battle for Libya is moving fast toward what could be a Berlin-style climax, with opposition forces advancing on Tripoli even as demonstrators in that city are mowed down in the streets and mosques by regime loyalists. From French President Nicolas Sarkozy we heard the clarion call of the civilized world: "Mr. Gadhafi must go."

And from the American President, the leader of the Free World, we finally heard yesterday—a call for sanctions. Details to follow.

The Obama Administration was missing in action amid the ouster last month of Tunisian dictator Ben Ali, and hesitant and erratic when it came to the resignation of Egypt's Hosni Mubarak. Perhaps that was understandable given that the breadth of Arab revolt wasn't yet clear, and that both regimes—along with Bahrain—are U.S. allies.

But that can't be said of Libya's "Brother Leader," even after the U.S. made its cold peace with him when he abandoned his secret nuclear program in 2003. Whatever claims Moammar Gadhafi had on U.S. forbearance vanished the moment he began to open fire on his own people. We understand the Administration must take account of the security of Americans in Libya. So too must the governments of Britain and France, which have been outspoken in their denunciations.

The World Is Blowing Up and This Is What the Obama Administration is Worried About?

In a major policy reversal, the Obama administration said Wednesday that it will no longer defend the constitutionality of a federal law banning recognition of same-sex marriage.

Attorney General Eric Holder said President Barack Obama has concluded that the administration cannot defend the federal law that defines marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Mr. President, Please Read What our British Friends Are Saying

It might have been thought that their President would try to alert them to the damage being done daily to their future, and to the serious shift in world power and influence away from a country so hobbling itself with debt.
Barack Obama has obviously calculated that the political risks are too great for candour, so he, too, operates within the dream by proposing some restraint on discretionary spending without touching the entitlement programs, the military or taxes. In this, he is complicit with Republicans in deforming the nature of the debate and ill-informing Americans.

He has obviously reckoned that, with the Republicans believing the problem can be solved by discretionary spending cuts alone, he isn’t going to do anything credible before the next election.

Abandoning Another Ally

The U.S. informed Arab governments Tuesday that it will support a U.N. Security Council statement reaffirming that the 15-nation body "does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity," a move aimed at avoiding the prospect of having to veto a stronger Palestinian resolution calling the settlements illegal.

From the Boston Globe

"The difference last night was program pedigree. The Eagles expect to win because they have won and they’ve turned Kelley Rink into a hardware store. The thing about trophies, York was saying, is that they come from single-elimination play, which is a format they’ve come to master at the Heights. Getting off your corner is the first step. How hard is it? Until last night, BC hadn’t managed it twice in a row since 1965."

When Are Our Politicians Going to Do Their Job????????????/

News Alert
from The Wall Street Journal

The White House projected Monday that the federal deficit would spike to $1.65 trillion in the current fiscal year, the largest dollar amount ever, adding pressure on Democrats and Republicans to tackle growing levels of debt.

The projected deficit for 2011 is fueled in part by a tax-cut extension that President Barack Obama and Republican lawmakers brokered in December, two senior administration officials said.

Mr. Obama is proposing $3.73 trillion in government spending in the next fiscal year, part of a plan that includes budget cuts and tax increases that administration officials believe will sharply bring down the federal deficit over 10 years.

Obama and Iran - June, 2009 and February, 2011

The protests are over now. They were quashed.

President Obama says he is concerned about violence directed at protesters, but does not want “to be seen as meddling in Iranian elections.” He also warns that the “difference between Ahmadinejad and Mousavi in terms of their actual policies may not be as great as has been advertised.”

From the Hill, February 12, 2011

The White House said Saturday that, off the heels of 18 days of Egyptian protests that ousted President Hosni Mubarak, Iran should allow its people to demonstrate.Tehran had praised Egyptians for rising up against Mubarak’s secular government, calling it an Islamic awakening. Yet some trace the roots of the grass-roots, social-media-driven revolt in Egypt to the Green Revolution protests against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s last election and demanding democracy.

Obama, Egypt and Iran

I find it puzzling that the Obama Adminstration exerted such pressure on Egyptian President Mubarak to hear the will of the Egyptian people and step down but did not say a word to the Iranian government back in 2009 when the people were protesting the results of the fraudulent election.

Do you think the Administration has an agenda here?

Tom O'Brien's Contract Status

I have been informed that Coach O'Brien's contact was extended beyond the 5 year contact he signed when he left Boston College for NC State in 2006.   His current contract runs through the 2015 season.

On another note, I am a big fan of Coach O'Brien's.  He resurrected the Boston College football program over the course of his 10 year tenure as Head Coach.  He ran a clean program and recruited the type of student- athlete that made us all proud . I will always be grateful for Coach O'Brien contributions to Boston College.

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

On the 100th anniversary of his birth, I long for a strong leader like Ronald Reagan.  For you young people who do not remember the Berlin Wall, watch this short clip of President Reagan.  The Wall came down shortly thereafter opening up Germany and Eastern Europe to freedom and liberty.

Does Obama Understand Loyalty?

For the first time, I actually agree with Chris Matthews.  Here are a couple of quotes from Chris Matthews on the Obama Administration's handling of the Egyptian crisis:

Wasn't [Mubarak] our friend for 30 years?  Are we denying that?...[After Sadat's assassination] we thought things might come apart over there and he held everything together.  He was strong....and now we say it's time for the game...Well we should have prepared this 20, 30 years ago.  Where is the State Dept.?  Don't we have hundreds of people sitting over there in Foggy Bottom with no other job except to know what's going on in Egypt...what are they doing?

I watch Sec. Clinton today.  I don't get anything.  I see anything more than two and two are four.  I keep waiting for five. Show me you've done your jobs over there...I feel ashamed as an American at how we're doing this...what have we done as leaders and as friends?  All we've done is watch.
