Candidates for Assistant BC Hockey Coach

The Boston College Hockey Blog (a great website for we BC hockey fans) is reporting that there are 4 finalists for the vacant BC hockey assistant coaching position.  They are:

  • Mike Mottau - former BC defenseman and the 2000 Hobey Baker winner.
  • Jeff Giulano - former BC forward and captain who was part of the 2001 National Championship team.
  • Ben Eaves - another former BC forward and captain who was a freshman on the 2001 National Championship team.
  • Mike Ayers - former UNH goalie.

It has long been speculated that Ben Eaves had a future in coaching.   Ben has expressed such interest and the coaching gene is certainly present (Ben's father Mike Eaves is the head coach at Wisconsin).

I am surprised to see former UNH goalie Mike Ayers on the finalist list given that he is not a BC alum and we have a proven goalie coach in Jimmy Logue, already on the staff.

I was not surprised to see Jeff Giulano's name on the list.  Although he was still playing professional hockey in Germany,  he is now in his early 30's with two small children.   Jeff comes from an extremely close family and it is understandable that he is looking for the next step in his career.  I was fortunate to have Jeff in two of my classes while he was at BC.  He is extremely smart, articulate and hard working.   He would be an excellent choice.
